*Is Black Jack Randall A Psychopath Relationship
ED SPELEERS is bracing himself for an outbreak of hate. It’s set to come his way because of his villainous ways in the new series of Outlander, the historical fantasy drama based on Diana Gabaldon’s books noted for the passionate loyalty of its fans.
Jonathan Wolverton Randall, commonly known as Jonathan Randall, Jack Randall, and ’Black Jack’, is Frank Randall’s direct ancestor and the main antagonist of both the first Season of the Starz 2014 original TV series Outlander and the historical time travel Outlander novel series of the same name by Diana Gabaldon. In the second season of the show, he is just a supporting minor character. According to Carter Matt, there is a possibility that producers bring back Menzies to play Black Jack or Frank Randall either through a flashback or dream. This will probably happen when Outlander revisits that mysterious scene in the pilot where Frank catches Jamie (Sam Heughan) looking at Claire (Caitriona Balfe) from the street. Watched all four seasons of the show recently and now am going through the books. While in Edinburgh during the ‘45, I really hate how Jack Randall’s reappearance is handled by Claire. (To be honest, I often find Claire to be a bad character. Either poorly written or just selfish as a characterization, I can’t tell).
It was easy to see why Black Jack was so evil, but with Bonnet, you actually like him at first because he does a great job hiding his darkness. Just when you want to give him the benefit of the doubt, he does something atrocious. In fact, executive producer Ronald D. Moore said it best when he characterized Bonnet as being a “pure psychopath.”.
Como jogar poker online. ‘As long as I’m unpopular for the right reasons — for my character, not because my acting is rubbish — then I’m fine with that,’ says the 30-year-old, best known as Downton Abbey’s flirty footman Jimmy Kent, just a hint of trepidation underscoring his breezy tone.
The character destined to give Speleer’s popularity a nosedive, Stephen Bonnet, is certainly a piece of work. An Irish scoundrel with piratical tendencies that take in robbery, rape and more, he makes his presence brutally felt in the opening episode of Outlander’s fourth season, rocking the boat for time-shifting lovebirds Jamie and Claire (Sam Heughan and Catriona Balfe) just when their fortunes are taking a turn for the better.
‘There were some full-on scenes that were very hard to do,’ he admits. ‘You try to find empathy with every character you play — at least I do — but with Stephen Bonnet those scenes were a test. You had to remember that everything he did, however horrific, harked back to the horrors he’d been through himself.’
‘I am going to get typecast as psychopaths’
Not that Bonnet’s backstory — a seafaring brush with near-death looms large in his psyche — is apparent when we first meet him, sneakily slipping the noose and appealing to Jamie’s noble nature. In Outlander folklore Bonnet tussles for the title of most hated villain with Black Jack Randall, memorably played by Tobias Menzies, but Speleers mounts a sturdy defence of a man who, on the surface, would appear to be the epitome of pure evil.
‘Bonnet could easily have gone down a different, noble path but life became difficult for him,’ he says. ‘You’ve got to travel into the history of modern Ireland to find the man Bonnet became. I really didn’t know too much about that before this role but when you grasp the full extent of the horrors that befell Ireland, you see the shades of grey in his character.
‘Is he pure evil? Is there any such thing as pure evil? As a father now, when I hear about some of the horrendous things that happen, the abuse, I find it hard to see that kind of thing as anything other than pure evil. But with Stephen Bonnet, it’s all about his instinct for survival and I think you can relate to that. Even though he does some terrible things.’
Speleers brings the same charm to Bonnet that made him a Downton favourite, topped off with an impeccable Irish accent. It’s a combination that makes Bonnet’s fearful villainy all the more biting.

The role marks a sea change for Speleers, who got his big break in fantasy film Eragon at 18, his blond good looks leading naturally to good-guy roles. But he’s happy his career has shifted into parts calling for a darker edge. Since filming wrapped on Outlander, Speleers has been touring the country in a theatre production of Rain Man, taking the role of Charlie Babbitt, the part played by Tom Cruise in the Oscar-winning 1988 movie. Any comparisons between Babbitt and Bonnet?
‘Babbitt is egotistical, selfish, borderline sociopath — and when I first looked at the role of Bonnet, we talked a lot on the show about whether Bonnet was a psychopath,’ Speleers says. ‘Maybe I’m going to get typecast as psychopaths from now on. Seriously, though, it feels like there’s a different rhythm to what I’m doing now as an actor.’
When we speak he’s in Guildford preparing to go on stage in Rain Man — and looking knackered.
‘My two young kids have been touring with me around the country for the past couple of weeks, which is a huge benefit of doing a tour like this,’ he says. ‘But my son couldn’t sleep last night so I was lying on the floor next to him. I really didn’t get much sleep last night — I might need a few espressos when I hit the interval tonight.’
Not such an evil guy after all. Send him some love.Is Black Jack Randall A Psychopath Relationship
